Unlike many schools in Japan, lunch is not eaten in the classrooms, but in the school's cafeteria located on the first level of the school. There is no walls separating the lunchroom from the rest of school seeing as the area is also used as a hallway. It is just off to the right of the stairs. Right across from the stairs located on the cafeteria's wall is the school's bulletin board which has school news and announcements posted on it.
This image depicts the relationship of the lunchroom to the hallway and stairway.
The lunchroom has long tables that seat at least twelve. There is enough tables and chairs to seat at least 250-300. Only one class eats at a time. Class B eats between 5th and 6th period.
The long tables are set up in rows like this. Also, the cafeteria is filled with lots of windows being located along two outside walls.
During the summer days, students are allowed to eat lunch in the courtyard. The courtyard that shares a wall with the cafeteria has the same long tables and chairs. Professional landscaping surround the courtyard and there are plenty of trees to take shelter under. When not raining, the courtyard is the more popular place to eat during the warm months. Once the students switch to their winter uniforms, however, the courtyard becomes closed of to the students until summer comes around again.
While most students bring lunches from home, hot lunches are provided at the school. The menu contains daily specials and ala carte items including pasta, meat, and vegetable main dishes. The typical serving is seasoned rice, accompanied with a side dish (such as scrambled eggs, fried chicken, and boiled vegetables. Ramen, soba, and udon are served on a daily basis. Deli-sandwiches, soups, and salads are also served daily, changing between the different types available each time. The ala carte line offers senbei, pretzels, bagels, candy, and ice cream. Milk choices are the only beverages available through the hot lunch line. However, throughout the cafeteria, there are a variety of fruit juices and water available in vending machines.
While food is provided at the school, the cost can be pricey. Most students would rather bring their own food from home or just stick to the cheap food like ramen or bread.
Students are not restricted to eating in the cafeteria. Some students prefer solitude and would rather take their food elsewhere in the school. Also during this time, students are notorious for sneaking to the school roof for a smoking break, though it is not something the administration approves of.
On another note, not much is wasted during lunch. Students are expected not to waste food. All plates and bowls are washed and reused. Students are not to bring their lunch in plastic bags and instead are expected to bring bento boxed lunch for them to reuse. Students must supply their own chop sticks from home and are not to throw them out.
